Leptospirosis is an illness caused by bacteria from the Leptospira family. These bacteria thrive in warm, damp environments and outbreaks are often linked to recent flooding. While Leptospirosis is extremely rare in Melbourne, there have been a few cases diagnosed in the city’s outskirts in recent years.
How is infection transmitted?
Exposure to Leptospira bacteria is most commonly via urine from infected rats which can contaminate soil and water. Dogs can contract the bacteria through contact with mucous membranes or skin wounds.
What are the clinical signs?
Symptoms of Leptospirosis typically emerge about a week after infection. They are often vague, including fever, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhoea associated with acute liver and kidney disease. While many cases may only present mild symptoms, some can be severe or even fatal.
Is there a vaccine for leptospirosis?
Yes, there is a vaccine available for certain strains of Leptospira. However, it is not part of the core vaccination schedule in Melbourne and is considered an optional vaccine. Although it does not guarantee complete protection, it can help lessen the severity of symptoms if your pet does contract the disease.
Is my dog at risk?
Leptospirosis is very uncommon in Melbourne, but factors that increase risk include:
- Contact with contaminated or unfiltered water
- Exposure to urine from infected animals
- Contact with wildlife that could be carrying the bacteria, especially rats
- Travel to northern parts of Australia including NSW, QLD, etc
Is there a risk to human health?
Leptospirosis can spread from dogs to humans, making it a zoonotic disease. It’s important to maintain good hygiene, such as washing your hands thoroughly. If you have concerns about exposure, consult with your GP.
